A photograph is a unique way to capture an instant in time. It is a way to preserve memories and record personal history. Often as valued as the memories themselves, a collection of visual snapshots taken together documents the narrative of a life. Kate Davis Caldwell is a painter who explores the fleeting glimpses of existence captured in our immediately gratifying world of Polaroids, digital cameras, and camera phones. Her show Based on a True Story is a collection of small paintings inspired by snapshots of her environment.

In a recent statement about her work, Davis describes her latest work as “seductive because of the dreamy and nostalgic quality they evoke.” The muted colors are reminiscent of an earlier time. The edges are dark giving her paintings a pinhole effect. She said, “My recent work explores ideas of perceived memory and sensory landscape. Existing in a place and one’s perceived memory of that place can be two entirely different things. What we more often remember are series of vivid images overlapped by lesser sensory ideas of the experience. These vivid images float amidst a lesser sensory recollection (touch, smell, sound). The groupings of paintings create frameworks with their respective gaps in between; much like memory itself.”

Kate Davis Caldwell received her B.F.A. from the University of Vermont in 1998. This is Davis’ third solo exhibition for the Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Davis has also recently shown work in group shows including: Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; AAF Contemporary Art Fair 2005; City Hall, Philadelphia, PA; Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Lenhartsville, PA. Last August, Kate completed a residency at the Vermont Studio Center.
