Keith Crowley

September 28 - October 30, 2010

Opening Reception with the Artist
First Friday, October 1st
6:00 - 8:30 pm

The Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to present its second solo exhibition by artist Keith Crowley. "Basin" will be on view from September 28 - October 30, with an opening reception Friday, October 1, from 6:00 - 8:30 pm. The exhibition will feature approximately a dozen new paintings on paper, canvas and aluminum.

Crowley’s latest body of work draws on nature, light and color to create landscapes which are inspired by historical art lineage, yet are far from cliché or nostalgia. He finds his subjects in bodies of water and their adjacent land, as well as the manmade components of our surroundings. Crowley’s work finds beauty in the inanimate, fabricated elements of the environment, by including them alongside the natural world in a perfectly harmonious way. His works represent a real place, not an ideal world, where landscape is an actual habitat rather than an aspiration. Crowley achieves this perception of nature by using photography to capture a scene, and then cropping and editing snapshots to inspire an image which is not merely a reproduction of scenery, but a unique landscape of the mind. In the show catalog, Kelly Baum, Haskell Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Princeton University Art Museum, describes Crowley’s view as “a realist’s perspective tempered by a redemptive, affirmative spirit.” He digests the world around him, and rather than find fault, he finds beauty. Truly reflective of modern landscapes, the artist says “These paintings are primarily motivated by responses to visual sensations and a sense of place.”

Keith Crowley received his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design (Savannah, GA) in 2001, where he received a Presidential Fellowship. Crowley's work has been published in the 2010 Northeast Edition of New American Paintings, and has received awards for painting in the 2010 "Art of the State" exhibition at The State Museum of Pennsylvania (Harrisburg, PA). His solo shows include "Wilderness" at Bridgette Mayer Gallery and "Distortions" at Starland Alternative Spaces (Savannah, GA). He has participated in many group exhibitions, including Alagon Gallery (Chicago, IL), the National Constitution Center (Philadelphia, PA), Artsbridge (Lambertville, NJ), the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA), McNeese State University (Lake Charles, LA) and the Savannah College of Art and Design.
