Hang Time

Bridgette Mayer Gallery Presents: Hang Time
June 6 – July 29, 2023
Artist Reception & Happy Hour: Thursday, June 8th, 5:00 – 7:30pm

Philadelphia, PA – May 9, 2023. Bridgette Mayer Gallery is thrilled to announce Hang Time, a new summer group exhibition. Inspired by the exhilaration and excitement of the HangTime roller coaster at Knott’s Berry Farm in California, the exhibition brings together bright, innovative work by eight California and coastal artists. Hang Time will be on view from Tuesday, June 6 to Saturday, July 29, 2023, with an opening reception and happy hour on Thursday, June 8 from 5:00 – 7:30pm at Bridgette Mayer Gallery.

Hang Time provides a curated body of work that varies in medium and scale, but which carries the carefree warmth and joy of a summer day. The exhibition features new work by: Ray Beldner, Carla Falb, Julie Goldstein, Ben Junta, Kaoru Mansour, Mark Tesi, Holly Wong, and Jason Woodside. Gallery clients will recognize Julie Goldstein’s playful, lively woodcuts depicting surf and sea imagery; Kaoru Mansour’s mixed media canvases celebrating the joy of nature in everyday life; and Jason Woodside’s vivid colors, patterns, and fades inspired by textiles, light, and nature.

Visitors will also be introduced to the work of five additional artists, curated by Bridgette Mayer for their strong and innovative artistic visions. Ray Beldner’s sculptures synthesize the imagery and forms of well-known art historical periods with the organic shapes of the Sierra foothills. Carla Falb, whose painting Hang Time inspired the exhibition title, captures the mystical quality of amusement lights on a darkened pier in her work. Ben Junta’s seascapes evoke the rhythmic peacefulness of floating in a calm ocean. Mark Tesi’s largescale photographs transport viewers to glowing West Coast sunsets. Holly Wong creates ethereal mixed media pieces that represent the beauty of freedom, growth, and transformation.

In the Vault, the Gallery will feature a select few Cut Outs from German-American photographer Jessica Backhaus. Backhaus’ Cut Out series has been shown internationally to great success, including award nominations from Paris Photo, the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, and the Arles Author’s Book Award. Her Cut Outs feature small pieces of colored paper, which dance across the bright background as the sun curls their edges. The resulting photographs are a vibrant and abstracted celebration of the here and now.
