Jason Woodside: I'll Be The Wind, The Rain, And The Sunset at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery

Bridgette Mayer Gallery Presents:
I’ll Be The Wind, The Rain, And The Sunset, a solo exhibition by Jason Woodside
May 10 – June 18, 2022.

Philadelphia, PA –April 26, 2022. Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to announce its first ever solo exhibition with gallery artist Jason Woodside. I’ll Be The Wind, The Rain, And The Sunset will be on view from Tuesday, May 10 to Saturday, June 18, 2022. The exhibition will feature 20 new paintings by Woodside, two hand-shaped and hand-painted surfboards, and a video installation in the vault room in the gallery.

Known for his vivid use of colors and fades with contrasting bands of patterns and shapes, Woodside often takes inspiration from textiles, light and nature, and plays with various bold textures to generate visual cohesion and optimistic emotions. This new series of works draws from Woodside’s experiences living near the ocean and his interest in the properties of light, contrast, and movement on the shore. This theme is further applied to his latest project in creating hand-made surfboards. Woodside describes:

Growing up in a small beach town in Florida, I found it difficult to channel a relevant, creative headspace. Therefore, I felt like I had to make it myself and this came through the beach and surfing. I’d watch old films, and I’d pay attention to the light and the music and still to this day those are the elements that really inspired me to create. This recent series of work titled I’ll Be The Wind, The Rain, And The Sunset embodies an exploration of light when illuminating objects and the effect when layered with contrast and the idea of subtle movement.

The surfboards contribute to this experience as a functional element that continues this exploration of how a figurative object performs in a visually contrasting environment when immersed in a variable light and flow...surfing has been a passion of mine since I can remember as well as being inspired by surf culture, so it’s quite fulfilling to share a project so close to home.
