Philadelphia, PA –June 2, 2022. Bridgette Mayer Gallery proudly presents The Sea in Me, a solo exhibition by Julie Goldstein. The Sea in Me is Goldstein’s first solo show at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery, and will be on view from Tuesday, June 28 to Saturday, August 13, 2022. There will be a closing reception with extended hours on Thursday, August 11 from 5:00 to 7:30pm.

The Sea in Me features new works by Goldstein, who is both a printmaker and fiber artist. In creating this new body of work, Goldstein was inspired by the lives and stories of the women rowers, fishers, and seafarers known as the Icelandic “Sea Women” of the 1930s – 1950s. She interprets and shares their experiences in a multi-media exhibition, featuring woodcuts, fabric quilts, and hand-typed stories. In describing her work, Goldstein states:

This new body of work resides in the rich historic connections amongst women and the sea. Based in Iceland between 1930-1950, the works are inspired by stories about “Sea Women” and their connection to a life that embodied maritime culture. The works are cultural, anthropological and historical coupled with contemporary influence, all embedded in context around gender identity, equality, breaking societal norms and family relationships. This is a semi-autobiographical narrative about Julie and her reflection on motherhood, kinship, and work-ethic all intertwined around tales of seafarer folklore and a deep eternal connection to the sea.

About the Artist:
Julie Goldstein’s art practice draws inspiration based on personal experiences that reside in storytelling, humor and whimsical interpretations around motherhood, marriage and everyday life. The stories told are often semi-autobiographical and are inspired by her personal relationships along with lively depictions of women throughout history and in a variety of societies that have collaborated to break societal norms, create change, empower and inspire. In multimedia works on paper and fabric, she mixes lithographic and woodcut printmaking along with text, stitching and embroidery techniques. She has exhibited widely nationally and internationally since 1998, including several solo exhibitions since 2008. Her work has appeared in Adventure Journal, NYLON Magazine, BLUE Magazine, Honey Magazine, Surfline, Surfer Girl Magazine, Daily Candy, Drift Magazine, NEast Magazine, Better Homes and Garden and Apartment Therapy, as well as a featured artist in the documentary Hanging Five. She collaborated with BING, BEAMS, AXXE, ROXY, Alternative Apparel, REEF, Patagonia and VUORI, creating everything from textile designs for apparel and wetsuits to skateboard decks. She has received honors from the Long Beach Island Foundation for the Arts and the Printmaking Council of New Jersey. Julie teaches Printmaking at California State University San Marcos and currently resides with her husband Mark Tesi and son Francesco in Encinitas, California.
