Rebecca Rutstein to show new painting at Art Basel with Nautilus Magazine and Schmidt Ocean Institute

November 29, 2023 – Miami Beach, FL. Bridgette Mayer Gallery is thrilled to announce Rebecca Rutstein’s participation in Art Basel Miami Beach, in partnership with UNESCO, Nautilus Magazine and Schmidt Ocean Institute. Rutstein will debut her new painting, Blue Dreams Still #1 at the Nautilus/UNESCO Lounge at the West Lobby of the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 6 to 10, with special programming on December 7 and 8.

Blue Dreams Still #1 is based on a still from Rutstein’s video installation Blue Dreams (2023), which was created in collaboration with scientists from the Ocean Memory Project (supported by the National Academy of Sciences / Keck Futures Initiative) and Schmidt Ocean Institute. Blue Dreams, recently on view at the National Academy of Sciences, is an immersive video installation which integrates abstract imagery, rare deep sea video footage (captured on a Falkor expedition in Mexico), and computer modeling, to illuminate hidden microbial networks in the deep ocean. These networks regulate global ocean chemistry, sequester carbon, and even mediate the air we breathe. The video is meant to inspire curiosity, wonder and connection to the deep ocean – which we rely on for our own survival – in the face of our changing climate. Blue Dreams Still #1 is inspired by a moment from the video, which was based on one of Rutstein’s paintings in-turn. The resulting painting is completely unique for its detail, layered creation process, and the symbolic narrative it represents.

Art Basel Miami Beach will run from Wednesday, December 6 to Sunday, December 10, 2023. On Thursday, December 7, there will be a special Artist Meet and Greet with Rutstein from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the Nautilus/UNESCO Lounge, West Lobby, Miami Beach Convention Center. On Friday, December 8 from 1:00 to 2:00pm, Rutstein join fellow artists in an Artist-at-Sea panel at the Frost Museum of Science, where they will discuss the power of artistry intertwined with scientific inquiry. The conversation will be open to the public and livestreamed on the Nautilus Magazine YouTube channel (@nautilusmag).
