Artist Statement:
Flux is a current and ongoing series of work that is defined primarily by the process of continuous change. From beginning to end, these works are in a constant state of wrestling with their final form. The paintings are initially covered entirely in saturated color and gestural brushwork. Little by little, areas are "carved out" with a masking color of paint that is often white, but not always. This allows me to see nuances and evidence of forms that are slowly coming into focus. As well, color may be added in areas to allow amplification or continuation of form. I am interested in the layers upon layers of brushwork, blocking areas out, adding areas back in, and ultimately creating evidence of a painting's history. This is an organic and intuitive process and I have little preconceptions of the end result. I often consider that these paintings are akin to sculpting; modeling and manipulating edges with a paintbrush instead of a chisel.
