"Kaleidoscope" by David Slovic

The Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition of artist David Slovic. High Light Rhythm will be on view from February 2 – 27, 2010, with an opening reception First Friday, February 5th, from 6:00 - 8:30 pm. The exhibition will feature abstract collages and tapeworks. Also on view in the Vault Room will be a site-specific installation by the artist, titled Kaleidoscope.

David Slovic's current body of work builds upon years of working with images of light. A single snapshot of a shadow, reflection or highlight, "employed like an individual brushstroke", says the artist, is reproduced and multiplied dozens of times throughout a single composition. The mono- and dichromatic arrangements of chromogenic prints take on an abstract life of their own, forming geometric shapes or operating within a traditional rectilinear frame, and all the while create a unique illusion of depth despite the inherent flatness of photographs. David Slovic states: "For me, abstraction is the process that frees the mind and allows it to move between the real, the imaginary and the symbolic. I choose to create tension and intensity by dressing the light in colors, to evoke the feeling that light means life and is mysterious."

David Slovic received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Cornell University, a Masters of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Loeb Fellowship from Harvard University. An accomplished architect, Slovic was awarded the Paul Philippe Cret Gold Medal in Design, and worked in the office of Louis I. Kahn prior to initiating his own architectural practice in the early 1980's. His recent solo exhibitions include "Signs of Light", Gershman Y Center for Art & Culture (Philadelphia, PA); "LUMINA", East-West Gallery (New York NY); "REFRACTION", Philadelphia Art Alliance, (Philadelphia, PA). Slovic has taught, lectured and been visiting critic at various institutions including Rice University, Yale University, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, UCLA, Columbia University, University of Madrid, and University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires.
