Opening Reception with the Artist
First Friday, May 1st, 6 - 8:30 pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10am – 6 pm

The Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to present artist Elyce Abrams’ third solo exhibition. Long Distance will feature panoramic acrylic on panel paintings, with sizes reaching 12" x 84."

Abrams applies multiple layers of acrylic paint to wooden panels. Each panel is sanded to reveal vivid layers of color that become deconstructed landscapes reflecting vast emotional and physical distances. Seemingly vast open spaces contrast between densely packed vertical columns in what Abrams describes as "a conceptual space that I occupied throughout the course of [personal] travels."

The panoramic nature of the panels reinforces the idea of landscape and lends itself to a narrative, open to the viewer's interpretation. Speaking on Long Distance, Abram states, "Creating art has always been a constant, stabilizing force in my life, especially in this past year. I questioned, despaired, misunderstood, compromised, and attempted to accept. I felt unsafe, disconnected, and at moments free. These painting move from start to finish and recognize that there remains a long distance still to go."

Elyce Abrams was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, 1973. She received her BFA with a concentration in painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, her BA at Tufts University in Medford, MA, her Art Education PA Teaching Certification from Moore College of Art and Design, and her MFA at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Abrams’ work was selected by New York Magazine Art Critic Jerry Saltz for the prestigious 2007 Miami University Young Painters Competition. Abrams has shown at the following: Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art, Philadelphia, PA, State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA, Tierney Communications, Philadelphia, PA, Painted Bride Art Center, Philadelphia, PA, Witaker Center of Art & Science, Harrisburg, PA. and the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE among others.
