PHILADELPHIA, PA – August 26, 2002
The Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of local artist Kate Davis entitled, “Persistence of Memory.” The exhibition will run from September 4 – September 28, 2002 with an artist’s reception First Friday, September 6th from
5:00 – 8:30 p.m. The show will include 10 paintings in varying sizes and 10 mixed media unique monoprints. Davis establishes thematic links throughout the works with a fluent dialogue between the two mediums.

Primarily an abstract artists, Davis’ process allows her to work outside specific formats. The richness of discarded materials and momentary impressions are woven into lush fields of color and sinuous line work that reconnect themselves as memories placed on the canvas. Everyday experiences turn into traveling artistic possibilities. They allude to autobiographical elements that lustfully wander among the meanings of transience and the universal.

Each layer of her mixed media works contain found objects, color harmonies, texture and patterning. There is a combination of strong design elements paired with more painterly, organic forms. As separate components of her paintings come together, the work achieves a distinct individual identity that dictates ultimately how it will resolve itself. The artist states, “This dialogue between the painting and myself is one of the most rewarding exchanges in the art making process.”

Davis’s pictorial language evokes a sense of personal history and iconography while drawing the viewer into a world that is at once recognizable and familiar as it is mysterious. The artist believes that the “Persistence of memory is what enables us to interpret the passing of time. Predominately narrative, this body of work aims at creating a connection between past and present. Imagery from the war era, dated photographs, and derived text all contribute to a new interpretation of past experience. A commonality among these works is their ability to evoke a sense of involvement with the viewer through nostalgia; a continuum inherent to everyone regardless of actual experience. Elements of memory, perceived experience, and history establish the foundations for these works.
