NEIL ANDERSON – “Traveling the Plane” - NEW PAINTINGS

Philadelphia, PA - In his third solo show at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Neil Anderson will feature a new series of paintings which he calls, Traveling the Plane. The exhibition will run from February 1 – March 1, 2008 with an opening reception First Friday, February 1st from 6-8:30 p.m.

The title of Neil Anderson’s exhibition, Traveling the Plane, could not be more appropriate. He explores the canvas plane through imagery that touches upon an exploration taking place since the writings of Roman architect, Vitruvius, later popularized by DaVinci’s drawing of the Vitruvian man: circle in square imagery. The image of a circle within a square is nothing short of ancient; however, Anderson’s paintings are as fresh as ever. With his expert eye for color and abstraction, Anderson has succeeded in modernizing the well known representation. Complimenting the works are titles such as Odysseus, Eurydice, Orpheus and Tristan, which evoke thoughts of travel, journey and quest. His highly refined surfaces feature meticulously painted layers of saturated pigment painted on super fine linen.

Anderson has said of his work, “I set up formal circumstances; certain kinds of structures, color groups and ways of applying paint which determine the direction in which the work will unfold. Formal ideas are included and excluded along the way. As little as possible is predetermined; there is always room to be surprised by the unexpected. I work with the conviction that merely executing the process will ultimately bear fruit. You could assume then that I believe in the integrity of this process as an end in itself, separate from other ways of thinking.”

Neil Anderson’s paintings have been exhibited nationally and collected widely. His work appears in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Albright College, Reading, PA, Tierney Communications, Phila., PA, Western Michigan University, State University, IA, the Jans Collection, the American Telephone & Telegraph, J. C. Penny Corporation, Prudential Insurance Corporation of America, Tupperware International Corporation and the Xerox Corporation. He has exhibited at the Whitney Museum, NY, the Museum of Modern Art, NY, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, NY.
Traveling the Plane will run through March 1, 2008. The artist will be present at the opening reception Friday, February 1st from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10–6:00p.m. and by appointment.
